Jenny says: In this category each film was personally selected for its powerful impact on me, and therefore this was an incredibly difficult decision, as they have all already been chosen, in a sense. The winner is Voilà because it shows the plight of artists everywhere struggling to keep going, expressed with such joy and poignancy.

Lois says: It immediately creates an atmosphere and drops you into the middle of a narrative. It has a comedic twist and a spaghetti western vibe, with the feel of a duel, black and white filming, long empty landscapes and a train track and filmic sound score. The camera plays with the view, the long shot of the track, the close in of the faces on the window, snapshots. The shifts of rhythm echo the relationship, the tension, the anarchic characters, the play.

Kimwei says: The Butterfly is my choice for a composed soundtrack. Not only the soundtrack itself, but the fit between the music and the visuals was really intuitive and very detailed.
Lucid Dreaming is my choice for best sound, with the soundtrack which combines atmospheric sounds and very detailed sound design. The level of detail is really quite astonishing and very effective. The sound design is constantly narrative, bringing us in and out of lucidity.

John says: What brilliant films and so difficult to decide this year’s winner. For sheer power of its dancers and use of the frame in exciting new ways - my choice is Morning Interlude. It was so close though, but this one just had so much originality - in like Tarantino had made a dance film. One of the most bold, original dance films I have ever seen.

Sarah says: Wow – this film is beautiful. Each character is fully immersed (with every inch of their being) into the world of magical realism. I love the characterisation (aided by the amazing costumes) and the weighty, gestural choreography, beautifully performed with control and attack by the whole ensemble. Gloriously intriguing and joyful – what a ride! The dancers interpret the idea of the piece, into something profound, manic and mesmerizing.
